Minutes
from December 19 2023, Meeting – Minutes
were submitted. Bobby Tucker motioned to
accept minutes as submitted. Brian Wrede
seconded. Motion passed by voice vote.
Guests
and New Members – 6 members of the
Bitterroot Valley Military Program; Rick Pozzi; Mark Moore.
Program –
·
Sean Smothers presented two members who were
eligible for promotion to cadet corporal.
Commander Himes conducted the promotion ceremony, and the new rank was
pinned on the cadets by their parents.
· Member Steve Davis and guest Rick Pozzi gave a presentation on Tactical Emergency Medical Care. This is the new standard for first responders to a large casualty event.
Membership – 2023-24 new
members and renewals to date are 187. This year’s goal is now 210. (89% of
goal).
Committee Reports:

Bitterroot Valley
Military Program: See attached report.
·
ALERT – Commander Himes spoke briefly regarding Doug Mason’s work in the
planning for an Active Shooter Drill at Hamilton High School in April.
·
Radio Club – Darby Dog Derby on 1/13&14 was cancelled due to severe weather. Winter
Field Day is still on for 1/27&28. There
will be no need to purchase a smart TV for BJ’s back room, as one had been
donated by one of the Post members.

Scholarships/School
Activities Bitterroot Marksmanship Club – Marc spoke
about the changes made for this year’s program.
The main change being the use of a lottery system if demand exceeds
funds at the Tier 2 level.

Fishing Club – Chris Haxton said recent donations from the Legion Riders and the Post
have allowed the club to buy 10 fly rod build kits. They will start this project this month.
·
Auxiliary – Edna Nasca reported that the recent ALA meeting went fine.
·
House and
Entertainment – Randi
Thorson will be the speaker at the February membership meeting. The topic will be Cybersecurity.
·
Commander’s Report – Commander Himes encouraged more member participation in the CSD#1
programs.

Social
Media – Randi mentioned she is still
working on getting a donate button on our Facebook page.
·
Fundraising
– Adjutant Clover said our fundraising package is
going out to a list of potential donors.
Also, FY25 budget preparation will begin the first of March. Any spending requests should be submitted by
then.

American Legion
Cruisers – No update on by laws development. Commander Harris reported that the Post may
have an opportunity to sponsor the restoration of a 1949 Ford convertible by
the inmates in the MT Dept of Corrections body shop job training program. The approximate cost would be $20,000. It would be worth about $40,000
restored. The Post then could raffle it
off and come out with a profit. More
details to follow before a decision needs to be made.

Active Duty
Homecoming AAR – Adjutant Clover reported that the Post sponsored two
active duty soldiers - One for dinner with his family at the Wild Mare and 2- an
airplane ride over the Bitterroot and lunch for him and his wife. Total expenditure for the Post is less than
$300. Commander Harris added that the
Bitterroot Valley Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter has offered to share the
costs of the program. We are still
drawing up the parameters of the program.

Buddy Checks AAR -
Buddy calls were made to 71 members who had not
participated in a Post activity over the past 12 months. Connections were made with 17. Two were referred to Brian Wrede for follow
up. Messages were left with 18. The
remaining were bad numbers or had full voice mail boxes. Doug Mason followed up with one member who
said he needed help with a roofing repair.
Calls were made and a local roofer has offered to replace the roof in
the spring at no cost.

Update – Adjutant Clover reported
that the rough draft will be submitted this week to the printer.

Flags
– Last month’s flag order has been received. Don Helmbrecht mentioned that one flag on
Main Street is hanging by one grommet.
He and Bobby Tucker will fix it once the weather improves.

New
Member – Ike Slaughter
motioned that the Post give a one year membership to Guest Rick Pozzi as thanks
for his presentation. Edna seconded the
motion. Motion passed by voice vote.
