 Minutes of Meeting Conducted by Corvallis Post #91, The American Legion, Department of Montana, Inc. Type of Meeting: Regular Membership Meeting Date of Meeting: 20 January 2021 Location of Meeting: Corvallis Fire Station Opening Time: 1900 Attendance: Post Officers - 6 Post Members - 14 Guests - 1 Minutes from November/December 2020 – 1 st Asst Vice Commander Williams read the minutes for November, Doug Mason motioned to accept minutes as read. Bob Koellermeier seconded. Approved by voice vote. 1 st Asst Vice Commander Williams read the minutes for December. Chaplain Wrede motioned to accept minutes as read. Bob Koellermeier seconded. Approved by voice vote. 2021 Membership Goal is 166 – Current dues paid membership as of January 20 is 164. Program Member Robert Montes – Financial Planner, spoke about the important aspects of financial planning and offered to meet with interested members after the meeting. 

Commander’s Report: Commander Turner was absent due to illness. 1st Vice Commander Williams reported on the following Executive Committee meeting items (Minutes attached): • Approximately 200 worn flags were ceremoniously burned on January 14th by members of the post honor guard. The goal is to perform the ceremony often enough so as to not get an overwhelming number of worn flags. Our pick-up box at the CFD is netting about five flags per week. • Current bank balances total $55,243.42. Not included in this amount are: o A recent anonymous $5000 donation. o Local Realtor Shayna Rupp will be donating a portion of her commission from a recent sale. o SFA 16 donated $2000 in support of the upcoming Active Duty Reconnect program. • Other Executive Committee items will be covered in the general meeting minutes. Committee Reports: 1) National Security – Ike and John Nolan reported on the planning for the 17-21 February Active Duty Reconnect Program. The schedule is almost solidified. 10 guests will be attending from several different Army units at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Schedule is attached to these minutes. Post members are encouraged to help with the logistics as well as attend the events when possible. 2) Membership- Member Vern Cortes discussed offering a shooting class for women post members. He is a NRA certified instructor and has put together an outline for a one day beginning course, which would be held at the Whittecar Gun Range in Hamilton. The Executive Committee has endorsed the concept. Vern will come back with more details at the next meeting. As there are 11 female members in the immediate area, the registration may need to be opened up to other Legion organizations such as the Auxiliary. 3) Family Liaison Committee - Post Amateur Radio Club. Doug Mason reported that the club leadership wants to institute their own licensing testing. Doug and one other club member are awaiting their credentials before testing can be done. The clubs annual field day will be 29-31 January at the Chief Joseph Trailhead. All volunteers are welcome.

 Old Business: • Don Helmbrecht talked about the postponed Veteran’s Day Dinner, now scheduled for March 15th. He will clarify what the occupancy of the Victor Steak House will be and report back next month. He will then begin to take reservations for the event. • Adjutant Clover reported that this meeting will be the last for Cash Calendar sales. District wants all remaining calendars to be returned to them for further distribution,

 New Business: • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training - Chaplain Wrede spoke about the training he will attending on Feb 3 & 4 in Helena. The post is covering travel and lodging expenses so that he can attend and his wife can accompany. • Doug made a motion to move the February membership meeting to Tuesday the 16th as the Active Duty Reconnect program starts on our usual meeting date (Wednesday 2/17). John Mowat seconded. Motion carried by voice vote. Good of The American Legion: •

 Monthly Pot of Gold Drawing – Member’s name picked was Vern Cortes, who was present. He is the first winner since the program was re-instituted four months ago. • Member Jack Berman reminded members to contact their state representative to support passage of HB111 which will revise the state income tax to exempt military pensions.

Corvallis post 91 will conduct its monthly membership meeting tomorrow tuesday February 16th at 7pm at the Corvallis fire hall. Suicide awareness and active duty reconnect will be the main topics. Hope to see you there!!

Post 91 will conduct its monthly membership meeting this wed Jan 20th at 7pm at the Corvallis fire hall on the woodside cutoff road. This months speaker will talk about financial planning. We will also have the "pot of gold" drawing at the end of the meeting for $500. Must be present to win! See you there!

TREASURES OLD, BUT NEW Military life involves constant moving. Families are uprooted again and again, moved from stateside assignments to overseas assignments – in Germany, South Korea, Japan, Okinawa, Italy, the UK, and Belgium – to name a few. When overseas assignments come, families will have most of the household goods – furniture, appliances, toys – put in storage. Then, when military families return to the States and get back their household goods, something pleasant and wonderful happens. They experience a sort-of “Christmas morning.” They re-discover treasures that they had forgotten they owned. This is especially true for children, who receive back toys and electronic games they had long since forgotten. When they get them back it’s like getting a bunch of Christmas presents. You know, the joy of re-discovering those old treasures is a lot like the joy that comes whenever we take time to count our blessings and thank God for them. Our foggy memories tend to put the blessings and joys of our lives “in storage.” God has poured many wonderful events, blessings, people, and treasures into our lives. But our lazy and under-worked memories have packed them all up “in storage” and we’ve forgotten what we have. As a result we completely lose sight of what we already have and focus on what we don’t have. We envy others and covet what they have. This practice can turn us into sour and complaining people. Let’s get all those blessings out of storage! Let’s put our memories to work and uncrate all the good things God’s given us. Let’s go through all those treasures and count all the blessings God’s lavished upon us. Let’s recount His many answers to prayer and celebrate the many times He’s protected us and kept us from disaster. Let’s remember God’s greatest gift to us – His own Son, with whom are all the unfathomable riches of heaven. Let’s open our hearts to God and let thankfulness flow from our lips to Him. Let’s rediscover how truly rich we are and have ourselves a Merry Christmas – every day! The Scripture says, “ Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). PRAYER: Dear Lord, Please jog my memory and help me recall all the blessings You’ve poured into my life. Help me to re-discover my long-forgotten treasures. Amen. Post Jeep An anonymous donor recently gave the Post a 1942 fully restored Ford Jeep. We are in the process of turning it into our own, with badging commemorating the Devil’s Brigade of the First Special Services Force, which originated in Montana during WWII. The Jeep will take part in the two Corvallis parades each year, as well as events to help recruiting efforts. Post member Tom Pedersen has volunteered to store and maintain the Jeep at his home shop in Stevensville. Active Duty Reconnect – 11-14 Feb 2021 The Post is hosting the 2021 Active Duty Reconnect program over February 11-14. Up to 6 active duty members will take part in winter activities in the area. Our Honor Guard Needs You! The Post 91 Honor Guard performs military honors at veteran’s funerals and memorial services. It also serves as color guard at local school events and parades. American Legion Oratorical Contest Planning is underway for the local portion of the National Oratorical Contest. George Deaderick is our coordinator this year. He is looking for a few members to help with the judging of the high school participant’s speeches. Please contact him at (520-371-2087) Veteran’s Day Dinner Rescheduled Due to limits on the venue, the November Veteran’s Day dinner is now scheduled for the American Legion Birthday, March 15, 2021. All Early Bird participants will still be honored with their dinner covered by the post. More details will follow. Monthly $500 Pot of Gold Drawing The Executive Committee has re-established the Pot of Gold drawing at the monthly membership meeting. The prize is a $500 gift certificate to Frontier Guns and Ammo in Hamilton. You must be present and a current dues paid member to win. “Come on down!” Warrior Mission Ranch Rifle Raffle Post Member Greg Povenski has tickets for the raffle of a Geissele 14.5”, 5.56 mm-DDC Super Duty Rifle. KG7SPL Post Amateur Radio Club The Post radio club will be kicking off the new year with a 2- day training to prepare one for obtaining their Technical Radio License. The training is open to all regular, auxiliary and SAL members. The training will be held at the Bitterroot College Computer Lab, January 2 and 9 from 0900-1400 each day.
